AV1

AV1 is a codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media as a successor to VP9. Taking parts from several nascent codecs being developed at the same time, AV1 borrowed in part from work being done by Google on VP10, Xiph.Org Foundation‘s Daala, and Cisco Systems‘ Thor.

AV1 currently sees wide use on YouTube for HD and higher content and is seeing growing usage across different platforms.

AV1 enjoys several independent implementations of both encoders as well as decoders along with the reference encoder, libaom.
